Behavioral interview preparation: the STAR stories that actually convert

Career Readiness ConsultingAugust 5, 20265 min read

Most candidates prepare answers. Strong candidates prepare six stories they can reshape into any question.

You cannot memorize an answer for every question, but you can prepare six stories that cover almost all of them.

The six stories

1. A result you are proud of. 2. A time you led without authority. 3. A conflict you resolved. 4. A failure and what changed after. 5. A time you learned something fast. 6. A time you improved a process.

Shape each one with STAR

Situation and Task in two sentences, Action in four, Result with a number. If you cannot state a result, the story is not ready.

Practice out loud

Silent preparation creates confident thinking and unclear speech. Record yourself once per story; you will hear the filler immediately.

Close the loop

End strong answers with what you would do the same way in this role. It moves the conversation from your past to their problem, which is where offers come from.
